Interactive Fractions

1.

Launch MS Paint.

2.

To make a shape, click on the desired shape on the Drawing Toolbar.

3.

To make a shape, place the mouse cursor, which is now a crossbeam
On the "paper" and hold down the left mouse button and drag diagonally. (NOTE: it will be easier for students to construct equivalent fractions with the rectangle or square. To make a perfect square or circle, hold the shift key while dragging diagonally. Also, make sure the middle option is selected. This will insure the shape has a border. When making the shape, start with a dark color to make the outline or border.)

4.

To make a second shape exactly the same size, click on the Select tool.
Again, the cursor changes into a cross beam. Click on the left mouse button and drag until the shape is "enclosed" and then lift up on the mouse button. Go to EDIT>COPY>PASTE.

5. To make fractional parts, click on the LINE tool and the cursor changes into a cross beam. Align the crossbeam with the line of the shape. Click with the left mouse button and drag. (NOTE: to make a perfectly straight line, hold the shift key down until the line is completed)

6.

To fill sections by clicking on the Paint bucket tool. Click inside the space that is to be filled. (NOTE: If all lines are not completely connected, the entire space will be filled).
7.

To "write" the fraction, use the Text tool.  When the cursor changes into a cross beam, click and drag to the desired size. The size and font can be formatted using the Textbox toolbar. (If the Textbox toolbar does not appear when the textbox is made, go to VIEW and click on Textbox toolbar).

The easiest way to "make" a fraction is to do the numbers individually, draw the line with the Line tool and then select the numbers with the Select tool and move to the desired location. Once the fraction is made, use the Select tool and "grab" (or select) the complete fraction and position.
